Sunday was mostly driving, and the trip was extended a bit thanks to a torrential downpour outside of Atlanta. We waited until the morning to explore the city a bit, and it was then that we had the ultimate Atlanta experience - a tour of the Coca-Cola factory. While it was interesting to see the evolution of a major facet of pop culture, we both agreed it was a little bizarre to see a) how seriously Coke takes itself as a "refresher of the world in mind, body, and spirit," and b) how fierce the consumer loyalty of the American people can be. We got free coke bottles though!
Driving through 4 more states and another torrential downpour outside Montgomery on Monday, we arrived in Slidell at my brother's apartment. We went into New Orleans for dinner, and on the way we got to observe a lot of the post-Katrina landscape. Some areas are renovated, some are cleaned up, and some are still piles of untouched debris. It will be a long time before the deep cut of that storm is more or less healed, but one has to wonder if there will always be a scar.
After dinner Jaime and I braved Bourbon Street for a couple of hours. It was fun to walk around, but we were both a bit too tired to deal with the blaring music and the smell (which is unfortunately reminiscent of the bottom of a garbage bag). So we had a beer - which we drank outside - and were on our way.
Tuesday we leave for Houston. On the way, we'll stop in Baton Rouge to have lunch with Megan Embrey, our mutual friend from Richmond. And once we get to H-town, lord knows Godfrey will show us a good time :)
2 days town, 8 to go!
FYI: All of the pictures from the trip will be posted on Facebook, but on these blog posts we'll put photographic evidence of our presence in each of the states we're going through, in addition to other photos we think you'll like.
